Botts Focuses on Points to Win on Lake Russell
Jonathan Botts of Abbeville, SC won the South Carolina division Ram Truck Open Series event at Lake Russell on April 16, 2016. Botts brought in an 18.08 pound limit, which included the 5.73 pound boater Big Bass, to win $5000 for first place and $480 from the Big Bass Pot. He also used an Abu Garcia reel to catch his Big Bass and was awarded a new Abu Garcia Revo XS reel valued at $159.99 through the Abu Garcia Revo Big Bass Bonus program. “I started in Rocky River and sat on one spot for about two hours. My second fish was my big one this morning. It jumped over my topwater bait several times. I knew there was a good one there, so I just waited it out. I ended up catching the Big Bass on a shakey head in that area. Clay points are where my fish were coming from. Most all of the points had blue back herring on them, but only some points had fish. They were really shallow,” said Botts.
Brian Gunn of Savannah, GA finished in second place with 14.07 winning $1158. “I started out in the mid-lake area and caught some fish early on a swimbait with an underspin type jighead. Later on, I finished out my limit with a shakey head and a spinnerbait. I didn’t lose anything today and fished really clean,” said Gunn.
Jason Burroughs of Hodges, SC finished in third place with 13.84 pounds worth $772. Burroughs also just won the Ray Scott Championship at Lake Hartwell a week prior before heading to the Lake Russell event. “It was a really tough day today. I caught some on topwater and caught some on a swimbait. I only caught six fish all day. I lost a good one that might have put me in second place, but there was no way I could have caught 18 pounds today,” said Burroughs.
