Messer Takes Home Victory at Kentucky

Tim Messer of Hendersonville, Tennessee won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Area 2 Championship, held September 24th & 25th on Kentucky Lake. Running out of Paris Landing State Park, Messer caught ten bass weighing 35.25 pounds to take home a check for $10,000 as well as taking home a Simms Challenger rain suit.

“I caught my fish on main river ledges. I moved around a lot and concentrated on throwing just as shallow as I could. I threw a ½ ounce shaky head and an Ole’ Monster on both days.  Using K-9 Flouro helped me land all of my fish that I had both days. The second day was a lot better day for me but I continued using the same technique that I used on Saturday to catch all of my fish,” Messer said.

In second for the Boaters was Same Lashlee of Camden, Tennessee landing ten bass weighing 33.21 pounds with a 4.41-pound kicker. He collected $1,400 for his effort. “On the first day, I started off by running to New Johnsonville where I knew there was a school of big fish. I eased up there and threw in there about 20 to 30 times using a top water bait. I put together a few fish on a top water Strike King Sexy Dawg. Them I swapped over to a 1.5 Strike King Sexy Dawg and caught the rest of my fish. I caught one on the second day using a Strike King Bull worm. I used these baits both days and it paid off,” Lashlee said.

Rodney Clawson of Nashville, Tennessee took third for the Boaters with ten bass weighing 32.83 pounds earning $1,000. “I used a jig all tournament long to catch my fish. I was targeting brush piles on both days. Day one was a much better day for me, I was able to catch fish all day. Day 2 was a little bit slower but I was able to catch about 7 keepers all day,” stated Clawson.

Finishing fourth, Mark Horton of Mt Juliet, Tennessee landed a ten-bass limit weighing 32.38 pounds with a 6.24-pound kicker.

Billy Schroeder of Paducah, Kentucky rounded out the top five boaters with ten bass weighing 31.38 with a 6.32-pound kicker. With his fifth place, Schroeder earned the title of Angler of the Year in the Kentucky Division.

Daniel Johnson of Lebenon, Tennessee walked away with the Big Bass Title with a weight of 8.41 pounds and earning $620. With his six place finish in the event, he also earned the title of Angler of the Year in the TN Central Division.

In the Co-Angler Division, Mike Blumer of Louisville, Kentucky won with six bass weighing 19.94 pounds. He sealed his victory with a 5.55-pound kicker to pocket a check for $5,000 as well as taking home a Simms Challenger rain suit. With this victory, Blumer secured the Angler of the Year Title in the Kentucky Division.

“The first day, I caught some of my fish on top water and then we went deep the rest of the day on ledges. I caught them on spinnerbaits slow rolling it. Today, I caught m fish off of shell beds using a worm in about 5 to 6 feet of water,” stated Blumer.

Taking second for the Co-Anglers, James Gunn of Nolensville, Tennessee brought in a five bass weighing 19.44 pounds topped off by an 8.71-pound kicker collecting $600 for the effort. “My big fish came on a swimbait, we were fishing ledges in probably 5-6 feet of water. Most of the fish I caught both days came off the main lake,” stated Gunn.

Mark Shane of Indianapolis, Indiana placed third among the Co-Anglers with six bass weighing 19.17 pounds with a 4.34–pound kicker to earn $500.

In fourth place among the Co-Anglers, Dianna Montgomery of Lebanon, Tennessee brought in six bass weighing 18.07 pounds.

Jim Hayes of Louisville, Kentucky caught the biggest bass of the event on an Abu Garcia reel, he took home a new Abu Garcia Revo XS.

Dustin Childress of Chapel Hill, Tennessee took home the title of Angler of the Year for the Tennessee Central Division.
